BPM vs BPS

Business process management (BPM) is the approach to aligning an organisation's business activities. It promotes business effectiveness and efficiency whilst striving for innovation, flexibility, and integration with technology.

BPM Suites provide the platform to develop and improve processes continuously and enables organisations to be more efficient, more effective and more capable of change. The only drawback being the upfront costs and investment of time and resource...

In recent years Business Process Solutions (BPS) built on BPM methodologies have come to market, responding to the pressing need that today’s businesses have to operate more effectively and efficiently. BPS inherits all the advantages that BPM provides and offers a point solution to the organisations needs and reduced costs.

But a question arises; is it better for organisations to buy licences for a BPM platform where you can build a multitude of bespoke solutions to suit your organisation requirements or choose a BPS readymade point solution?

A good analogy of BPM and BPS would be comparing them to eating at home and eating at a restaurant.

Home cooking requires tools such as appliances in a kitchen along with an initial investment of raw ingredients and taking the time to learn through recipe books on how to prepare a meal. Over time the meal is tweaked to suit your own taste buds until perfection is reached. This approach provides you with the skill and platform to cook many different dishes and over time works out far better and cheaper than eating in restaurants.

But what if there is not enough time or the inclination to learn how to cook in the kitchen?  In this case a restaurant provides the best option. A set menu of tried and tested meals without the fuss! The drawback being that each time you want to try a different dish you have to visit the restaurant and over time it becomes quite expensive.

In life we strike a balance between eating at home and going to the restaurant. Should businesses consider opting for a BPM platform for ongoing in-house solution developments but also consider looking at BPS for immediate needs, mission critical needs and time critical solutions?

Whether choosing a BPM platform or the readymade BPS solution, one thing is for sure; food always seems to taste better when someone else cooks it for you J
